Teamson Kids Little Chef Normandy Wooden Play Kitchen
French Country × Soft Minimal | Consumer Trend Research to Shelf
This product line was part of Teamson Kids’ core 2025 product categories. As Product Lead, my main challenge was to position a wooden children’s kitchen toy in the $200–$250 price range on Amazon. Informed by social media trends, I guided the designers in translating realistic kitchen interior features into a design language suitable for the target market, ensuring strong market competitiveness. The Little Chef Normanday Kitchen Playsets were successfully launched online in Summer 2025. By October 2025, they had achieved an average customer rating of 4.8+ stars across multiple online platforms, validating both the product's quality and the effectiveness of the product strategy.

The key challenges of this project included identifying niche gaps in the US Amazon play kitchen market through the lens of interior design trends, and guiding designers in translating real interior styles into preschool toys while balancing manufacturability and cost control.

Play kitchens occupy a significant amount of space in a child’s bedroom or living area, making them a furniture-level purchase decision for parents. Although this strategy was developed for the 2025 NPD, it was essential to reference prior years’ interior design trends, as parents often select play kitchens that align with their home aesthetic. According to Houzz’s 2024 U.S. Interior Design Trends report, searches for Modern French Country kitchens, vintage elements, copper finishes, and warm metallic accents increased significantly. In the 2024 large play kitchen market, the dominant styles were retro 80s/90s, transitional, and minimalist. This revealed a clear market gap: French country and cottagecore styles were underserved.

According to 2024 U.S. interior design trends, cream and light earthy tones, wood, and natural materials were dominant, while patterned tiles, vintage warm tones, bronze accents, and modern cottage-style cabinetry were also highly favoured.

To translate interior design trends into the design language of preschool toys while keeping costs under $60 ($200–250 MSRP) and staying true to Teamson’s brand authenticity, I established the following direction based on a French country × soft minimal style: 1. Patterned tile panel and decorative range hood cover — signature French country details, achieved through printed panel graphics without adding significant cost. 2. Copper and brass accent hardware and faucet — selected from existing components to align with the warm metal accent trend. 3. Rope plate rack — adds lifestyle authenticity and a cottagecore reference. This feature also helped the product stand out in the existing market. 4. Curved-form oven — better expresses a farmhouse-style appliance. The colourways were developed around three bright, earthy tones drawn from 2024 trends. Cream served as the main colour, while sage green and dark blue were selected because they were the most parent-friendly options within the play kitchen category.
