Training Resistance Bands
4.5/5.0 Rating | $1.00 Per-Unit Logistics Saving
The resistance band kit was designed to enhance Greater Goods' fitness category performance. I led the entire product and packaging design, closely monitoring the prototyping process. My focus was on ensuring the bands met strength standards and maintained CMF (Color, Material, Finish) consistency with other fitness products, particularly in matching colors between the yoga mats and blocks despite their different materials. Lastly, the uniquely designed flat package reduces costs based on the Amazon shipping tier and enhances the unboxing experience.

Major Challenges: 1. Ensuring the product color matches the requirements. 2. Keeping the height of the final packed product under the maximum height for the Amazon shipping tier (19mm) while maintaining a good unboxing experience.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a shift to indoor exercise, with Yoga and Strength & Cardio topping the list, as reported by NDTV. This led to a notable surge in online training classes and a high demand for home fitness equipment on platforms like Amazon.

As newcomers to the fitness industry, we embraced an agile development process, exploring materials and manufacturing methods while sketching ideas and creating prototypes—a departure from our previous projects. Latex resistance bands are versatile and suitable for various fitness levels, while fabric bands are primarily used for lower-body exercises and offer greater resistance. As newcomers to the market, we chose latex bands for our initial trials.

Greater Goods' design direction is guided by three key principles: alignment with GG's branding and aesthetic, a focus on practical functionality over unnecessary decoration, and a strong emphasis on cost awareness. Amid the pandemic, people experienced feelings of depression due to restrictions on outdoor activities. We chose cheerful and bright colors, consistent with our other yoga fitness products, to help lift users' moods.

To denote different strength levels, the intuitive icon featuring Greater Goods' branding elements was proposed. Inspired by the movements of resistance bands and battery charging icons, we combined these concepts with Greater Goods' distinctive pill-shaped patterns from its original branding. For resistance bands, accurate weight labels and exceptional durability are paramount. Our design team thoroughly assessed the product, considering key factors such as resistance, elasticity, and oxidation.

To align with Amazon's shipping terms and save on shipping costs, the height of the resistance band gift box should be under 19mm. This adjustment allows for a $1 saving within the same weight region. Addressing this challenge required minimizing the size of individual product items without compromising Greater Goods' branding and the opening experience. The solution involved introducing a tray with product instructions, facilitating easy access to all items, including the pack of 5 resistance bands and a storage bag, from the opening side of the box.
